What Is Specialist Support Coordination?
Specialist Support Coordination is the third and most intensive level of NDIS support coordination. The NDIA may fund it when a participant's situation involves high complexity or risk – for example, involvement with the justice, health or child protection systems, a housing crisis, frequent hospital admissions, or complex behaviour support needs.
A specialist support coordinator does more than connect you with providers. They work to reduce complexity, manage risk, resolve barriers between service systems, and help build a stable support network around you.
If your needs are less complex, standard Level 2 support coordination may be a better fit.

Who Might Benefit From Specialist Support Coordination?
Specialist support coordination may suit participants who:
- are at risk of homelessness or need urgent changes to their living arrangements;
- are involved with the justice system, or leaving custody;
- have complex health or mental health needs and move between hospital and home;
- have behaviours of concern and need coordinated behaviour support;
- have limited or no informal supports, or their support network is under significant strain; or
- are working with many agencies and need someone to coordinate between them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 support coordination?
Level 2 (Coordination of Supports) helps you implement your plan and build your skills. Level 3 (Specialist Support Coordination) is for situations involving high complexity or risk, and focuses on reducing barriers and coordinating across multiple service systems. How do I get Specialist Support Coordination funded?
The NDIA decides whether specialist support coordination is reasonable and necessary. It helps to provide evidence of the complexity in your situation – for example reports from health professionals or other services. Your current coordinator, planner or local area coordinator can help you raise this with the NDIA.
Can professionals refer to Beyond Limits?
Yes. Hospitals, case managers, support coordinators, families and participants can refer using our online referral form or by calling 1800 920 600. We always seek the participant's consent.
